Location
Lews Castle overlooks Stornoway, the main town of the Western Isles - perhaps better known as the Outer Hebrides. This chain of islands stretches over 150 miles from the Butt of Lewis in the north to Vatersay in the south.
The joined 'island' of Lewis & Harris constitutes the third largest of the British Isles. A dramatic and diverse environment and a bi-lingual culture, with the Gaidhlig language in everyday use, make this one of the most distinctive regions of the UK.
Stornoway (population 5,600) is a busy port with an excellent harbour, catering for ferries (connecting to Ullapool), general cargo, fishing vessels, yachts and cruise ships.
Stornoway airport just 3 miles east of the town can handle large jet aircraft and has direct scheduled services direct to Edinburgh, Glasgow , Aberdeen, Inverness and Benbecula.
